INSTRUCTIONS FOR PAYING TRAFFIC
CITATIONS:
You have been issued a traffic citation by the CITY OF DULUTH POLICE
DEPARTMENT. On non-mandatory charges you have the choice of appearing in
court on the court date written on the front of your citation, or
pleading "Guilty" and paying the fine prior to court. Only a plea of
'Guilty" can be accepted outside of court. If you plan to plea otherwise
you must come to court.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION REGARDING PLEAS:
- We will no longer accept pleas of No Contest (NOLO) at the cashier's window.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION CONTINUANCES:
If you need a Continuance, and you have not already requested one, it must be submitted, in writing, to the Court and be approved by a Judge. Your request must be received by our business office no later than 5 business days prior to your original assigned court date. Our business hours are Monday – Friday from 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
Your request must contain your name, citation number, address, e-mail address, and phone number, along with the reason you are requesting the continuance.
You are to assume that your request has not been approved and you are still expected to appear in court on your original assigned court date until you receive a phone call from the court staff advising the Judge has approved your request. At that time, you will be expected to do the following:
- Come to our business office before your original court date
- Sign a continuance form.
At that time, you will be assigned a new
date
After all procedures are complete, you will be taken off the original
court docket.
In person:
You may pay your fine during regular business hours with CASH, CREDIT
CARD, MONEY ORDER or CASHIER CHECK.
By mail:
Sign the back of your ticket or the ticket instructions sheet.
Mail it to the address on your ticket with a MONEY ORDER OR CASHIER
CHECK. NO PERSONAL OR BUSINESS CHECKS ACCEPTED.

The 24HR Payment drop box is located at the Public Safety Building,
in the side parking lot, next to Davenport Road.

ADDITIONAL IMPORTANT INFORMATION:
- If you are paying your fine on the day of your court, you MUST appear in court at 9am.
- Failure to pay your fine or appear in court will result in up to $100 additional fines, a license suspension and possibly a warrant issued for your arrest.
- Anyone UNDER 21 years of age (17, 18, 19 & 20) must now come to court for ALL REPORTABLE citations.
- If you are charged with any of the following you MUST appear in court:
- ANY ALCOHOL OR DRUG OFFENSES
- SUSPENDED LICENSE, SHOPLIFTING
- HIT AND RUN, FLEEING/ATTEMPTING TO ELUDE
- DISCHARGING FIREARMS
- MEETING OR PASSING A SCHOOL BUS
- SPEEDING IN EXCESS OF 24 (OR MORE) MILES OVER THE LIMIT (Under 21 year old driver)
- SPEEDING IN EXCESS OF 30 MILES OVER THE LIMIT( Drivers 21 and older)
- SPEEDING IN A CONSTRUCTION ZONE
- NO INSURANCE
- SUSPEND REGISTRATION
If you did not have insurance on the day you were charged, you must come to court. If you did have insurance, you may bring your proof to the court office and pay the state mandated $35.00 fine without appearing in court. This may not be handled by mail. (The coverage must be for the vehicle you were driving or you may bring the policy which states you are covered for any car that you drive.)
