Planning & Development - Street Light Repairs & Requests

The City of Duluth will provide street lighting within a residential subdivision upon written request from the homeowner's association via a petition. If you would like to have street lights installed within your subdivision, please submit to the Department of Planning and Development a petition signed by the property owner's within the subdivision. Upon receipt of a petition, the City will have the local electric provider do a survey of the area to determine how many lights are needed and at which location (based on national lighting standards). If it is found that there is not adequate lighting being provided by the existing street lights, then the City may install a street light at locations based on a recommendation from the local utility provider. If there is an existing utility pole, and a fixture simply needs to be installed on that pole, the same process applies.

The City will pay for the installation of street lights and the monthly energy charges. Gwinnett County does not offer this same service, Gwinnett County residents are billed on their electric bill through the utility company.

On City maintained streets, when a pole is damaged or knocked down the City will replace under certain terms. Where there is decorative lighting, the City will pay the amount of a standard pole toward installation of a new pole. The City will not cover the entire cost of replacing a decorative pole.

If you are interested, contact the Planning Department at 770.497.5294, by email or simply download the petition and submit to the Planning Department.
